Why vacuuming is not enough

A vacuum lifts what sits on top of the carpet. The gray traffic lanes in a hallway or the dark strip up the stairs are soil that has worked down to the base of the fibers, and it takes more than suction on the surface to remove it. A little local history

Matthews began as a stop on the railroad. Track came through the community in 1874 and the town was incorporated in 1879. Its old nickname, Stumptown, lives on in the Matthews Alive festival, whose Labor Day parade officials describe as the largest in the Southeast.

The heart of old Matthews is the Matthews Commercial Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. Its ten contributing buildings along North Trade Street and East Charles Street date from 1888 to 1939 and include the Heath and Reid General Store, the town's oldest commercial building. The Massey-Clark House, built around 1879, now holds the Matthews Heritage Museum. Newer Matthews has grown around that core, and US 74, NC 51 and Interstate 485 tie it to Charlotte, Mint Hill and Stallings.
